A word (or two) from Drew...
I liken directing to fortune telling.
Deciding the energy of the piece and the design team to match. Picturing how the set might work, and how it will interact with the demands of the story. Imagining how the script might be perceived in a specific political climate, and how the tone might be interpreted through the eyes of people of all backgrounds and experiences. The date with destiny is known, but the circumstances are the results of deep collaboration with a team of smart artists all pointed in one direction.
Woody Guthrie said “Any fool can make something complicated. It takes a genius to make it simple.” Broad comedy, or delicate drama, we strive for one cohesive gesture toward whatever truthful path we want to lead the willing audience down. There is a simple joy of agreeing to sit with a bunch of strangers, in a dark room, all facing the same way, to learn something about ourselves and about each other.
